At Corlea near Kenagh, oak timbers preserve the work of people living here in the Iron Age. Granard’s motte belongs to the medieval story of conquest and settlement. In Longford Town, the cathedral and canal branch point to much later chapters.
Each period leaves different evidence. Archaeology tells us about places where written records are scarce; historic maps show roads and buildings; archives preserve letters, public accounts and the names of ordinary residents.
Longford County Archives is particularly useful for Grand Jury papers, poor law records and old Ordnance Survey sheets. The National Monuments Service records earlier sites, while Buildings of Ireland helps explain the more recent built landscape.
Begin with a townland or street, make a note of the dates and sources, and follow the questions that arise. Where folklore and documentary history tell different stories, both are worth understanding on their own terms.
