Lough Gowna woodlands

For a walk beside Lough Gowna, Derrycassan Wood offers signed routes through a landscape with an older estate story.

The forest follows sections of the lake shore near Mullinalaghta. It has viewing places and picnic areas, as well as paths through both planted woodland and broadleaf trees.

What makes it more than a woodland stroll are the surviving remains of the Dopping Hepenstall estate. Old garden walls, bridges and other features remain after the main house was demolished in 1939.

Coillte lists three circuits: the 1.2 km Nature Trail, 2.3 km Walled Garden Walk and 3.2 km Main Avenue Walk. Each gives a different perspective on the forest.

The area is attractive for looking at trees and lake views, but it is not a general guide to launching boats or walking around the whole of Lough Gowna. Stay on designated forest routes. For the most detailed directions and current facilities, consult the Coillte site map rather than a generic lakeside map pin.
