Lough Ree forms part of the Shannon navigation and touches the county’s western and southern edges. The shore is varied: bays, islands, fields, settlements and stretches of natural habitat rather than one continuous public promenade.
Its waters have supported fishing, transport and lakeside communities for generations. The lake is also connected with religious history, including the monastic sites at Saints Island and Inchcleraun.
For people who prefer to remain on land, the Lanesborough waterfront and Commons Woodland Trail provide ways to experience the river-and-lake environment. The woodland route includes shorter loops as well as a longer walk.
Lough Ree Access for All operates organised boat trips designed with accessibility in mind. Trips must be arranged with the operator, and weather is always a consideration.
Do not assume a point marked on a map is a public launch place or safe place to enter the water. Navigation, conditions and access should be checked with the appropriate local service.
