Ballymahon Market House

This limestone building has had several lives: a place to buy and sell, a courtroom upstairs and, more recently, a library.

Ballymahon Market House was built between 1819 and 1826 on the town’s Main Street. Samuel Mullen designed it for the Shuldham family, local landowners whose crest can still be seen in the front pediment.

The arches at street level belonged to the market. Upstairs was a courtroom, placing trade and local justice under the same roof.

The building changed over time, including alterations around 1880. Its later use as a library has given the town a way to retain and use one of its strongest civic landmarks.

The building is an easy feature to appreciate from Main Street. For present-day library hours and services, check Longford Library rather than relying on historic descriptions of the building.

The building is still part of everyday Ballymahon life. Its former court and market rooms now accommodate the public library, with reading and community spaces inside the historic structure.
