This extensive mixed woodland formed part of Newcastle Demesne, associated with the King-Harman family. The old estate story remains in the place names and surviving landscape features.
Coillte now manages the forest for recreation and forestry. Visit Longford describes approximately 28 km of forest roads and walks, while its walking guide identifies marked options of different lengths.
There is also a short access-for-all option in the woodland, along with a described wheelchair-accessible path. These should be checked against the current site map rather than taken as a guarantee that every trail has the same surface.
The River Inny gives the woodland much of its character. A walk here can pass from dense trees into lighter riverside sections, with interpretation of plants and wildlife along the way.
Newcastle Wood is near Center Parcs Longford Forest, but the forest’s public walking information and the holiday resort’s facilities are not the same thing. Use the Coillte trailhead details for a woodland outing.
For a straightforward first visit, Coillte maps three signed choices: a brown-marked 1.2 km loop from the Inny Bridge car park, a green-marked 3.7 km loop that follows the river, and a longer red-marked 5.6 km perimeter route starting at White Bridge. The names and starting places matter; they are not three distances for the same path.
The main Coillte trailhead is by Inny Bridge, reached by a small road from Ballymahon. Check the site map for your chosen loop and follow any temporary forestry safety signs.
