Brí Leith Walk

Above Ardagh’s planned village, the Brí Leith Walk offers a hill-country view of Longford.

Brí Leith, also known as Ardagh Mountain, has a strong place in local legend. The story of Midir and Étáin links the hill with the wider mythical landscape of early Ireland.

The route follows a resurfaced old walkway through a landscape that feels quite different from the village green and its Victorian cottages.

Visit Longford describes the walk as 4.3 km and moderate, with a 200-metre elevation figure. It is a hill outing, so suitable footwear and weather planning matter.

Folklore is part of what gives the walk its character; it should be enjoyed as story rather than treated as a documented account of prehistoric events. Ardagh’s clock tower and estate village provide a good contrast after the hill. Use the official trail map for the starting point and route.
