Edgeworth Literary Trail

Edgeworthstown’s literary trail is a way to read the town through the people who wrote about it and stayed here.

Maria Edgeworth’s novels made her an important literary figure, but her world included family members, visitors and correspondents interested in education, politics and writing.

The trail links historic school buildings, church grounds and places associated with the Edgeworth family. It also introduces connections with writers such as Walter Scott and William Wordsworth.

Some of the buildings are not public attractions in their own right. A guided walk puts them into context without implying that visitors can enter private or residential properties.

For readers who want more than the tour’s outline, the Maria Edgeworth Centre and county archives hold complementary material. The family letters add dates, voices and the detail of daily life.

Discover Ireland lists the literary walk as a pre-booked experience. Check the local operator before travelling, particularly if you are planning a group visit.
