Maria Edgeworth Centre

The Maria Edgeworth Centre tells the story of a writer who lived most of her life in County Longford.

Maria Edgeworth (1768–1849) was a novelist with a keen interest in social change and education. Works such as Castle Rackrent and The Absentee drew on a world of estates, tenants, family decisions and public affairs that she knew closely.

The centre is in a former schoolhouse, an apt setting for a family strongly involved in educational ideas. Its displays help visitors put the author and her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, into their local setting.

There is another side to the story in the county archives. The Edgeworth Family Papers include letters from Maria and accounts relating to other family members. These are documents to explore, not merely names on a literary plaque.

The Edgeworth Literary Trail links the museum to other places associated with the family and its visitors. Some parts are interpreted on guided walks that need to be arranged in advance.

Allow time for both the writer’s life and the town around her. The centre gives an introduction; the surviving letters and local streets help supply the detail.
