James Farrell was one of three Killoe parish residents on the Titanic. According to Longford Tourism’s account, he helped Katie Mullen and Katie Gilnagh of Rhyne, and other passengers, reach lifeboats in April 1912. He did not survive the disaster.
The monument was unveiled for the centenary in 2012. The anchor came from Belfast Harbour Commissioners; a stone from the Farrell family home at Clonee gives the memorial a direct link to the place he came from.
James’s story has appeared in accounts of the sinking, including Walter Lord’s A Night to Remember. Here it is remembered not simply as a Titanic story but as part of the history of families in Killoe.
The memorial can be visited as a place of remembrance. Please leave the area as you find it and respect any local events or services.
