County Longford cycle routes

Longford has published cycle loops for very different kinds of day out, from canal corridors to steep northern climbs.

In north Longford, the Granard Heritage Loop is described as a 42 km ride taking in Abbeylara and the Lough Gowna area. Other loops pass Ballinamuck, Ballinalee and Corn Hill, where the road climbs are more demanding than the county’s generally gentle reputation suggests.

In the south, the 29 km Ballymahon loop links the town with canal country and the Abbeyshrule area. The 36 km Lanesborough route passes towards Newtowncashel and views of Lough Ree.

The 32 km Cloondara–Keenagh route uses much of the canal corridor. Its quieter setting does not mean it is ideal for every road bike: surfaces can be softer than ordinary tarmac.

Distances and difficulty ratings come from the official cycling information and are a planning guide, not a guarantee that conditions have stayed unchanged. Select one published loop, check its map and current road or towpath notices, and allow extra time for stops at villages and heritage places.

BEFORE YOU GO

Routes are graded differently: the Granard Heritage Loop is 42 km and marked moderate; the Aughnacliffe–Ballinamuck Loop is 29 km but marked difficult. Check the full map, climbing and surfaces before choosing.
