Longford Town & the Mall Walk

The Mall gives Longford Town a stretch of green beside the River Camlin, only a short distance from the shopping streets.

Also known as Albert Reynolds Peace Park, the Mall has planted walks, areas for sport and spaces to sit beside the river. It is a town park used by local people, not a remote country trail.

Visit Longford describes a 2.6 km loop within the park, with options to explore the wider town. The Camlin, flowerbeds and tree-lined sections make the walk feel different from the streets only a few minutes away.

The park includes public art, notably Gary Robinson’s Timelessness stone-circle work marking the millennium. It is one of the details that can be easy to overlook on an ordinary walk.

A town walking route can also bring you towards St Mel’s Cathedral and the Longford branch of the Royal Canal. Those are separate stops rather than features inside the park loop.

Choose the route using the published map, and check local signs for any works or temporary restrictions around sports areas and paths.

Two different distances appear in the published visitor guide: 2.6 km for the park loop and 4.6 km for the wider town-and-park walk. The longer version connects local heritage sights and the beginning of the Royal Canal branch; it is not another measure of the same park circuit.

For a different way to see the town, Longford Tourism also offers a free 2 km audio walking tour, with stops around Market Square, Farrell Bridge, St John’s Church and St Mel’s Cathedral. It is a town-history route, not the same as the 2.6 km park loop.

BEFORE YOU GO

For a short walk, use the 2.6 km Mall park loop. The fuller town-and-park circuit is listed at 4.6 km; consult the illustrated map if visiting landmarks beyond the park.
