Longford is a county town that works as a shopping and service centre as well as a place to visit. Its streets carry traces of nineteenth-century commerce, while the cathedral makes an unmistakable landmark near the centre.
The Christmas Day fire of 2009 destroyed much of St Mel’s Cathedral’s interior. The long rebuilding brought together stonemasons, artists and craftspeople, and the reopening in 2014 became a major moment for the town. The repaired building is worth seeing for the restoration story as much as for its original architecture.
The Mall, also known as Albert Reynolds Peace Park, follows the Camlin through planted parkland. Visit Longford describes a 2.6 km park loop, with further town-walk options. It is a useful change of pace from the shops and traffic.
The Longford branch of the Royal Canal gives the town another route into its past. You can explore the old transport corridor on foot or bicycle and learn more about the trading network that once connected the midlands with Dublin and the Shannon.
For town history beyond the landmarks, the Royal Irish Academy’s Irish Historic Towns Atlas and Longford Library’s local newspapers and historical maps are especially useful.

The Mall beyond the walk
Visit Longford describes a playground, outdoor gym, sports areas and picnic spots within Albert Reynolds Peace Park. Its separate town-and-park walking trail links civic landmarks with the canal branch; use the published map for the route, rather than assuming the two walks are identical.
